The Hindenburg
It was filled with Hydrogen due to a restriction on helium in the United States.
It was a huge ship,
804 feet. Made in Germany. Largest ship ever built.
My mother was a 7-year-old living in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Her father was an engineer and worked at the base. My mother and family lived in a high-rise in Lakehurst across from the base.
On May 6, 1937, the Hindenburg LZ-129 landed at Lakehurst Naval Air Station.
The Hindenburg was moored when it burst into flames and was gone in 30 seconds.
35 perished, and 65 survived.
Was it static electricity that caused it?
Was it sabotage?
Five and a half years to build a terrible loss for Germany.
Living off base in a high-rise building, my mother and family were watching from their window as the Hindenburg landed; it was a great event for them.
Expressions of disbelief were as the Hindenburg burst into flames. My Gramma, Grandpa, and Mom watched in horror as the huge heat wave hit their window. My mother expressed her battles of waking at night from terrible dreams.
Hindenburg Note: 4 Daimler-Benz engines of 830 hp
